Did you know that Elitism is quite common nowadays?
People who think they are above other commoners because of wealth or some special skills tend to congregate in groups that include others with similar traits.
The elite culture is increasingly found in universities, sports teams, and social circles. The effect it has on other people and society is prominent, but nothing tends to be done about it because these elites are held in high esteem, and they continue to flaunt their power.
The following are some of the dangers of an elite culture that society has to endure
- It Sets a False Standard
As elitists are popular in any place, their lifestyle and choices are considered the traditional culture. Their taste in music, the places they visit, and the kind of books they read all become a standard, and everyone else tries to follow to fit in. But most of us can’t keep up with our false idols.
- Keeping Up with the Crowd
One would believe that the “commoners” are the sole individuals who have difficulty keeping up. WRONG, as those who are a part of the elite culture also find great difficulty in keeping up with themselves as they have to maintain a standard to remain in the group, which can be pretty overwhelming for some.
- Elitists Look Down on Others
Elitists think of themselves as up-to-date with everything. A new iPhone is launched, and they get it. A new fine dining restaurant opens, and they visit it. As they think so highly of themselves, they look down upon the others who cannot afford all these facilities. They treat popular culture as inferior and reject it altogether.
