Overcoming Procrastination

Did you know that 95% of people procrastinate to some extent? It is often confused with being lazy. Procrastination is different. It means wasting time doing something else instead of the task.

Why do people procrastinate?

A person may procrastinate because the task is tedious or because they lack interest, so they tend to focus on another enjoyable task instead. Whatever the reason, procrastinating for long periods can hurt the quality of your work and lead to stress, demotivation, and poor performance.

The following are some of how you can overcome procrastination

1. Recognition
The first step to overcoming procrastination is recognizing that you are doing so. This means you might be doing other tasks that aren’t so important, or you might start doing the main job but leave it and start chatting with someone or having a snack.

2. Give the Task a Few Minutes
It is often said that if you spend a few minutes on a task, your brain becomes alert and does not rest until it is finished. So if you persuade yourself to start somehow doing the job, chances are you will complete it. It’s like a book you start reading and cannot keep down till you reach the end.

3. Optimize Your Environment
The environment you work in is the number one reason for procrastination. Having your cell phone around or emails that keep popping up tends to be a significant cause of delay. So before you start working on an important task, put away your gadgets. You will get your job done in quality and record time.
